The Story of Sin Architects

At Sin Architects,
we believe architecture is an act of care.
Care for people. Care for place. Care for purpose.

From this foundation flows the story of Sin Architects: a practice defined by resilience and an unwavering commitment to people and purpose.

We are a practice that is guided by empathy and insight, not trend or ego. We listen before we draw, asking the kinds of questions that uncover what people truly need from the spaces where they live, work, heal, or worship.

At its heart, Sin Architects is about more than buildings — it is about shaping environments that enrich lives today and create a legacy for generations to come.

The practice was founded by architect Michael Sin, a visionary and problem-solver with over four decades of experience. From aged care facilities that honour the dignity of residents, to complex multi-unit developments that bring people together in thoughtful ways — Michael’s approach is always human-first. He’s known in the industry not just for what he builds, but how he builds: as someone who sees constraints as opportunities and thrives on the challenge of finding smart, creative solutions. Whether navigating the complexities of healthcare design or reimagining large-scale residential developments, Michael consistently leads with empathy, ingenuity, and a clear vision for spaces that serve real people, beautifully.

That legacy is what sets Sin Architects apart — and it’s the foundation its practice is built on.

As such, from the outset Sin Architects has been shaped by a deeply personal ethos: that architecture should serve, and that design should carry meaning long after the build is complete.

Sin Architects’ portfolio spans a wide spectrum, from specialist aged care and hospital design, to high-rise residential developments, industrial warehouses, education projects, reclads, and places of worship. No matter the scale, every project is approached with the same clarity of vision, technical mastery, and deep respect for those who will inhabit the space.

Family has always been at the heart of practice.
— Michael Sin, Founder & Managing Director

For many years, Michael worked alongside both of his sons, also trained architects, before they each went on to lead successful careers of their own. Today, Jonny Sin is the Founder of Sin&Co., leading the London studio and the practice’s international hospitality portfolio, while Michael continues to play an active role as Non-Executive Chairman, heading the New Zealand studio and Senior Living portfolio. Together they bring complementary strengths, unifying their studios to deliver architectural services worldwide.

Michael Sin leads the Auckland studio with decades of experience and insight, supported by a close-knit team of architects and designers who share his commitment to people and purpose. The studio is recognised for its expertise in senior living, healthcare, and multi-unit residential projects. With a culture built on collaboration and mentorship, the team balances technical rigour with human-centred design, enriching Sin&Co.’s global practice.

In London, Jonny Sin directs a growing studio focused on premium hotels, branded residences, and resort developments. Working side by side, the two studios blend seasoned expertise with fresh creativity, ensuring every project is approached with care, collaboration, and a shared belief in architecture’s power to enrich lives.
